Farmer suicides a worry for Maharashtra govt in election year
Maharashtra is witnessing one of the worst droughts, with many villagers struggling to even get drinking water
MUMBAI: More than 610 farmers have committed suicide in Maharashtra this year, indicating the intensity of drought and rural distress in the state. The figure was given in a written reply by Maharashtra cooperatives and rehabilitation minister Subhash Deshmukh in the state assembly. From 2015 to 2018, Maharashtra saw more than 12,000 farmer suicides.
The huge number of deaths are blamed on crops failure, lack of water to irrigate fields due to drought, lack of market prices for crops and damage to crops due to recurring hail storms. The Maharashtra government in its latest budget has promised that Rs 12,000 crore would be spent on irrigation and Rs 350 crore for micro-irrigation. The huge number of farmers committing suicides should worry the BJP because the latter had made suicides a major issue before the 2014 parliamentary and assembly polls. Maharashtra is set to go to the polls in another three months.
The Maharashtra opposition has been claiming that the BJP and Sena governments have done nothing to help farmers. On Friday, opposition leader in the legislative council, Dhananjay Munde of the NCP, claimed that even the promised farm loan waiver for distressed farmers in the state have not been given. He drew the attention of the state to a farmer who was publicly awarded a certificate on loan waiver but two years later his farm loans are yet to be waived.
